The Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Prof. Dadson Awunyo-Vitor, has urged newly admitted students to take full advantage of the College’s orientation programme as they begin their academic journey.
Addressing freshers at the orientation, Prof. Awunyo-Vitor congratulated them on securing admission into the College’s programmes and stressed the need to familiarise themselves with university life, expectations and regulations.
“Let me start by congratulating you for making it to the various programmes of the College. It is important that you equip yourselves with the conditions and expectations at the University because there is a significant transition from what you experienced at the senior high school or sixth form level,” he said.
He explained that unlike senior high school, where students operate under close supervision, university education demands greater independence and personal responsibility.
“The situation at the University is completely different. That is why orientation is necessary. If there is anything you do not understand, raise your hand, ask questions and seek clarification,” he advised.
The Provost further reminded the students that they were beginning a structured four-year academic journey organised into semesters, and encouraged them to take college, faculty and departmental orientations seriously, noting that these sessions are critical to effective preparation for lectures and academic life.
Also speaking at the programme, the Deputy Registrar of CANR, Mr. Charles Asamoah Boateng, welcomed the freshers and underscored the importance of understanding the University’s systems and rules.
“Congratulations. We expected you, and you are here. We need to tell you who we are, where you can go, where you cannot go, what you should do, what you should not do, and how we will support you throughout your stay here,” he said.
He noted that the orientation was designed to help students integrate smoothly into the University community and make informed decisions throughout their studies.
The programme featured presentations from key units, including the University Information Technology Services, the Examinations Office and the Library, aimed at equipping students with essential information to navigate academic and administrative processes within the College.
Deans of faculties, Heads of Departments and other senior members of the College were also present at the orientation.
